DefCon: Campaign to Defend The Constitution. Because The Religious Right Is Wrong
During our stem cell campaign, DefCon America ran two full page ads in the New York Times in May and June. Click here to see the ad from May. Click here to see the ad from June.

We also released our first video on YouTube featuring DefCon advisory board member and former NARAL head Kate Michelman's incredible story and by doing all we could to empower the millions of Americans for whom we are fighting. Click here to view the video.

To be sure, the fight for health and hope is not over. In the coming months, this fight will move to the states, where citizens are tired of waiting for a misguided President to do the right thing and have taken the issue into their own hands. Stay tuned to the DefCon Blog for updates.

Moving Forward

Friday, August 17th, 2007

As is obvious, the DefCon Blog hasn’t been getting the attention it has deserved over the last several weeks..
The main reason for this has been my absence. After much consideration I have decided to step away from DefCon and the blog. I noticed that in the comments, many of you have already jumped to […]

Max Blumenthal Exposes Christians United for Israel

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

DefCon friend Max Blumenthal has released a video recorded during his trip to the Christians United for Israel’s annual Washington-Israel Summit. For those unaware, Christians United for Israel is the epitome of the religious right’s pro-rapture movement. It is led by mega-pastor John Hagee, and enjoys political support from Tom Delay, Rick Santorum, and Sen. […]

And The Hypocrisy Continues

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Another week, another scandal involving prostitution and the Religious Right. This time it was Coy C. Privette, who was, until he went down in flames, president of the Christian Action League, a North Carolina political lobbying group that “represents conservative evangelicals from 15 Christian denominations in the Tar Heel State that cooperatively address the […]

Creationism From Around the World

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

This has little to do with the anti-science crusaders we are fighting — the man behind this book doesn’t seem to have major influence over our political leaders etc — but it is very interesting.
From the New York Times:
In the United States, opposition to the teaching of evolution in public schools has largely been […]

FRC Lobbyist on DC Madam List

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Wow. As if Tony Perkins’ close affiliation with Vitter wasn’t enough, it now turns out that Jack Burkman — a former lobbyist for the Family Research Council — appears to also be on the DC Madam’s list.
From ThinkProgress, emphasis is mine:
Conservative pundit on DC Madam list.
The phone number of Jack Burkman, a conservative pundit and […]

University of Colorado Biologists Threatened Over Support of Evolution

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Panda’s Thumb has the full story.
From their post:
My colleague, Michael Grant of the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department, was one of the victims of the recent harassment, reported by Steve Reuland here. Professor Grant tells me that he has “been receiving these histrionic emails and books and packages for a year; he even comes into […]

Meet Our New DefCon Blogger

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Over the last week you may have noticed posts from a new face, Eliza. Eliza will be joining me as a regular poster on DefConBlog.org, ensuring that we stay on top of any and all of the religious right’s intolerant campaigns to impose their ideology on all Americans and of course their incredible hypocrisy.
Check out […]

Focus on the Family Takes on Live Earth

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

In Tuesday’s Citizenlink email from Focus on the Family, Dobson & Co. distributed a new video apparently produced in response to the Global Warming focused Live Earth events last weekend.
The video is full of the usual climate change skeptic talking points — and even has a nod to intelligent design at the end. This […]

More Theology Based Silencing of Science from Bush Administration

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Today’s Washington Post carries a story about the Bush Administration’s silencing of former Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona over key health issues.
From the Post:

Former surgeon general Richard H. Carmona yesterday accused the Bush administration of muzzling him on sensitive public health issues, becoming the most prominent voice among several current and former federal science officials […]

Evangelicals Reject Creation Museum’s Story

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

For weeks we’ve been talking about how the Creation Museum represents a schism within the religious right. Well now we’ve got the numbers to prove it. This poll (link to PDF) conducted by a national polling firm and released today by DefCon reveals bad news for Ken Ham and his Creation Museum. It also reveals […]

Score One For the Brits

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

From The Register:
UK Gov boots intelligent design back into ‘religious’ margins
The government has announced that it will publish guidance for schools on how creationism and intelligent design relate to science teaching, and has reiterated that it sees no place for either on the science curriculum.
It has also defined “Intelligent Design”, the idea that life is […]

Attorney General Gonzales to Speak at Discovery Institute Event

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Over the weekend the folks at ThinkProgress caught this article from last Thursday’s Seattle Times.
From the Seattle Times:

Gonzales is scheduled to deliver a 45-minute speech at the Seattle Westin Hotel’s Grand Ballroom on the Justice Department’s efforts to protect intellectual property and combat cybercrime. Justice Department spokesman Evan Peterson declined to confirm details of Gonzales’ […]

Bush Vetoes Stem Cell Bill

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

From the Associated Press:
Pushing back against the Democratic-led Congress, President Bush vetoed a bill Wednesday that would have eased restraints on federally funded embryonic stem cell research….
To blunt criticism, the White House said Bush is issuing an executive order directing the Health and Human Services Department to promote research into cells that — like human […]
