DefCon: Campaign to Defend The Constitution. Because The Religious Right Is Wrong
During our stem cell campaign, DefCon America ran two full page ads in the New York Times in May and June. Click here to see the ad from May. Click here to see the ad from June.

We also released our first video on YouTube featuring DefCon advisory board member and former NARAL head Kate Michelman's incredible story and by doing all we could to empower the millions of Americans for whom we are fighting. Click here to view the video.

To be sure, the fight for health and hope is not over. In the coming months, this fight will move to the states, where citizens are tired of waiting for a misguided President to do the right thing and have taken the issue into their own hands. Stay tuned to the DefCon Blog for updates.

Taking a Break

We wanted to let you all know that this will be our last blog post, at least for now. Our funding has run out, so we will be taking a break. We want to make it clear that this is in no way an admission of defeat, we’ve had some spectacular successes and it is clear that the religious right is on the run! Thanks to all of you, we’ve been able to fight the teaching of creationism in public schools, fight for stem cell research, run national ads showing Jack Abramaoff’s ties to religious right leaders, and in general shed an important light on the hypocrisy of the religious right. We’re going to leave the thread open for a few weeks so that you all can make connections. We really value this community, and hope to reconnect with you all sometime in the future. Thank you for all you’ve done to help in the fight to defend our Constitution.

    Dale,

You got my email address, and I’ve got yours. Keep me posted as to the blogs that you are visiting and if there is anything interesting that comes up. I’ve made the effort to respect the fact that you told me that you don’t like to receive a bunch of email, but if I ever come across something really interesting I’ll update you. I’ve been visiting several of the scienceblogs, and I also keep up with things that are occuring over at the Panda’s Thumb, at Thinkprogress.org, and at the Americans United blog. I post under the name “Engr Tony”, however, I’ve really been busy lately and cannot post as often as I’d like to.

To Albatross, Don, Alex, Yahweh, and others; I’ve enjoyed the commentary and hope to see any of you posting at some of those sites that I visit. If any of you have swapped emails with Dale, you can contact him regarding my email address.

To Eliza and DefCon: I’ll still be checking back to see if things sort themselves out.

    Best to all,
    Tony

    Hey kids!
Maybe a better Idea is to meet up, especially in the short term is over at vjack’s Blog.
Most of you remember him from his great posts here in the past. His site is, of course, his own, and he is a known quantity with paralell
views on most subjects. vjack is a smart cookie and very logical and he is the sole owner of his blog, which is nice in ways that I don’t want to expound on just now.
I have posted a comment on his latest thread that reads:
    “VJACK,
Hello! This is dale from over at DefCon. It was always good seeing you there but as you have probably heard, they are shutting down
the blog for the foreseeable future.
You are doing a great job here ,as usual.
I would like to ask you if you would mind a few of us historical DefCon supporters/ contributors using your blog as a new gathering/ info sharing site?
People end up scattering into the wind but we would like to find a sympathetic site to exchange links/ info on protecting the first ammendment
    and opposing the Religious Right.
    We promise to behave!
Thanks for your consideration on this,
    dale”

Of course one of the most important national organizations is AU and I plan to continue to support them also.

Eliza has said that this site will stay open for a “few weeks,” which means possibly three weeks to me, but now that the decision has been
made to shut down, they could pull the plug as directed, at any time.

Please acknoledge and let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

I’ll let you know what I hear back from vjack.

ahem, bill. We have all made many posts at AU. Don’t be silly.

Now on a more serious note, with Thanksgiving around the corner, I ask you all to please SHIT (Stop Hurting Innocent Turkeys.)
You can send donations to the National SHIT HQ, my new non-profit organization through which I have set my salary
at $175,000/ year, a pittance I might add, for the valuable work I am doing. The board of directors, my wife, sons, and daughters, have ok’ed that salary
and have awarded themselves consultaion fees of $85,000/ year/ each.

But, as a public sevice, If you insist on actually hurting a turkey and eating it, please be careful after it has thawed.
DO NOT PUT YOU HAND IN THE BODY Cavity without first checking for giblet snakes.
As the turkey thaws, they may come back to life.
To make sure this does not happen, impale a frog or a salamander on the meat fork and hold it close to the entrnce to the body cavity.
That will entice any giblet snakes to stick their heads out where you can decapitate them with the carving knife.
If you are bitten by the giblet snake it will introduce salmonella into your bloodstream and they will grow into bigger salmon in your stomach
and swim up your esophagus and come flying out of your mouth. We don’t want to see that happen!

I hope you ALL have a great time with family and friends and remember that it is not what we have, but what we enjoy that provides our abundance!

not all within this vast group of Christians are alike. (Gasp! You’re kidding!!)
Christianity Today International partnered with Zondervan Publishers to commission Knowledge Networks to conduct
attitudinal and behavioral research of U.S. Christians. In September 2006, they surveyed more than 1,000 self-identified
Christians of at least 18 years of age. Subjects were surveyed on their religious beliefs and practices. What emerged
were portraits five distinct segments of American Christianity: Active Christians 19 percent, Professing Christians 20 percent,
Liturgical Christians 16 percent, Private Christians 24 percent,
    and Cultural Christians 21 percent.

    say some good words.

    In his blog, he says:

“They excelled at the sort of brief but highly informative posts that conveyed vital information in few words.
They were also the first place I would learn of many important action alerts. Of course, I probably don’t have to tell you how
important they were - looking at the hundreds of comments they receive on most posts, it is likely that you are already familiar with them.”

There is also at least one comment from a person who read DefCon, but didn’t comment, Just as we read a lot of stuff but don’t comment.

AiG is not advocating that creationists go to the courts or legislatures to mandate that creation or intelligent design be taught in public schools,
we are scratching our heads as to why DefCon is so concerned about the museum as it relates to constitutional issues.”

Yahweh, I also looked through your link. I don’t know how it will pan out, but I feel certain that Guantanomo (?)
is a US POW camp. I am not so certain on the Geneva Convention, but I have always been of the opinion that
if we hold a detainee, we grant them the rights to the rules under which we held them by. Too many US citizens
have been held captive by these “rules,” based on their appearance and their religious beliefs, and thus, deprived
of their rights. If we can’t hold them, and apply the law to them, I believe we’re supposed to turn them over to their
    governing authorities.

There could be mistakes made in the process, but it is all about the process. There is no question, the US has allowed
for the violation of its’ principles with this administration, and others before. The question is will be be able to restore it
    in our time?

I really enjoyed that legal opinion piece; however, I hope that the writer was being overly pessimistic. However, it is a good
lesson to learn that that particular fight is far from over, and we can not simply rest on our past victories. Frankly, it is a shame
that science education may be at the mercy of the legal system, and any decision to gut science education in this country is
done at our peril - the rest of the world will simply pass us by and this nation will forever loose its technological advantages.

One need not look further than that recent breakthrough in stem cell research - that breakthrough was accomplished by
    Japanese researchers.

    Susan B. Anthony

In her publication The Revolution, was written:
“Guilty? Yes. No matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed. It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death; But oh, thrice guilty is he who drove her to the desperation which impelled her to the crime!”
Abortion was referred to as “child murder.”
    The Revolution, 4(1):4 July 8, 1869
“We want prevention, not merely punishment. We must reach the root of the evil…It is practiced by those whose inmost souls revolt from the dreadful deed.”
    The Revolution, 4(1):4 July 8, 1869
“All the articles on this subject that I have read have been from men. They denounce women as alone guilty, and never include man in any plans for the remedy.”
    The Revolution, 4(1):4 July 8, 1869
    Elizabeth Cady Stanton

She classified abortion as a form of “infanticide.” The Revolution, 1(5):1, February 5, 1868
“When we consider that women are treated as property, it is degrading to women that we should treat our children as property to be disposed of as we see fit.”
Letter to Julia Ward Howe, October 16, 1873, recorded in Howe’s diary at Harvard University Library
“There must be a remedy even for such a crying evil as this. But where shall it be found, at least where begin, if not in the complete enfranchisement and elevation of women?”
    The Revolution, 1(10):146-7 March 12, 1868
    Emma Goldman

“The custom of procuring abortions has reached such appalling proportions in America as to be beyond belief…So great is the misery of the working classes that seventeen abortions are committed in every one hundred pregnancies.”
    Mother Earth, 1911
    Mattie Brinkerhoff

“When a man steals to satisfy hunger, we may safely conclude that there is something wrong in society - so when a woman destroys the life of her unborn child, it is an evidence that either by education or circumstances she has been greatly wronged.”
    The Revolution, 4(9):138-9 September 2, 1869

    Victoria Woodhull

The first female presidential candidate was a strong opponent of abortion.
“The rights of children as individuals begin while yet they remain the foetus.”
    Woodhull’s and Claflin’s Weekly 2(6):4 December 24, 1870
“Every woman knows that if she were free, she would never bear an unwished-for child, nor think of murdering one before its birth.”
Wheeling, West Virginia Evening Standard, November 17, 1875
    Sarah Norton

“Child murderers practice their profession without let or hindrance, and open infant butcheries unquestioned…Is there no remedy for all this ante-natal child murder?…Perhaps there will come a time when…an unmarried mother will not be despised because of her motherhood…and when the right of the unborn to be born will not be denied or interfered with.”
    Woodhull’s and Claffin’s Weekly, November 19, 1870
    Mary Wollstonecraft

As early as 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote “A Vindication of the Rights of Women,” which Susan B. Anthony admired enough to serialize in The Revolution. After decrying, in scathing 18th century terms, the sexual exploitation of women, she said:
“Women becoming, consequently, weaker…than they ought to be…have not sufficient strength to discharge the first duty of a mother; and sacrificing to lasciviousness the parental affection…either destroy the embryo in the womb, or cast if off when born. Nature in every thing demands respect, and those who violate her laws seldom violate them with impunity.”
    Matilda Gage

“[This] subject lies deeper down in woman’s wrongs than any other…I hesitate not to assert that most of [the responsibility for] this crime lies at the door of the male sex.”
    The Revolution, 1(14):215-6 April 9, 1868
    Alice Paul

The author of the original Equal Rights Amendment (1923) opposed the later trend of linking the E.R.A. with abortion. A colleague recalls her saying:
“Abortion is the ultimate exploitation of women.”

Yeah Alba, I read that part also. There was also that example where scientists applying the theory of evolution in real practice have been assisting
farmers (many in the bible-belt states that oppose evolution) in dealing with new species of pest that have been evolving that are resistant to past
pesticides and pest control measures that are destroying their crops.

    Only a theory, indeed…

Well, dunce, sad as it may be, much of modern medicine is based on some horrific acts that did occur
in Nazi Germany. Don’t you watch the 700 Club as part of your “training?”

As to why my friend had conflict, part of it was “modern medicine” and its’ ties to Naziism, and the rest was
her personal concerns that sometimes medicine goes with the best it knows, and more is to be learned.
That is how science works, you know, if you don’t subscribe to the ‘God did it all, ask no more questions theory.’

I was perusing the comments from last night and I find where bill does not understand how to make a simple percentage.

    Bill_from_defcon Says:
    percentage
    51/22,500= = 0.00226666

    hahahaha?
Perhaps he is laughing at his own ignorance.

.002 What? bill? What is the percentage? It is not .002 percent. HA HA HA HA you ignorant bastard HA HA

He pissed in his own wheaties again. EVERY time he has tried to do some math he screwed it up. He says he was
going to give a percentage but guess what? He DOESN’T KNOW HOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He has no understanding of math outside of simple arithmetic.
This guy can’t even do seventh grade math. What a freaking joke.
Then he wonders why he has no credibility! HE DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE how ignorant he is.

Try again bill, what percent of 22,500 is 51? Hmmmmmmm?
You are a dithering moron. You don’t know simple math. You have no command of the english language. You are a functional illiterate.
IT GET’S WORSE. bill has no clue as what makes a logical statement.
It’s gotta suck to be handicapped like bill. What could it be like to live life under all his delusions?

There is no way in fu*k that he could ever hold down anything but a menial job, no way in hell and any trained person could read his stuff and not know that immediately.
That is the way we test candidates for jobs, we read what they write. One of the first screenings we do in my organization is three pages of simple questions
including a couple simple math problems. It is not the answers on this screening that are important; it is the way they are answered. I can tell you that bill’s incompetance would be readily
    apparent on the first question.
Ignorance personified- and I can prove it.

doesn’t answer; she is good about returning all calls in a timely manner.

half hour, or until it sets off your smoke detector, whichever comes first, then reduce to 350 degrees for the balance.
Use your meat thermometer! The thick leg meet has to get to 180 but the breasts are good a 160……..
I stuff mine with cut up lemons, bunches of sage and thyime, salt and pepper. If you stuff the bastard with bread, the bird is
usually overcooked by the time the stuffing is up to temp. I make my corn bread dressing on the side!

By the way, it is standard convention to write your erroneous percentage number, .002, as 0.002 so the decimal

“A new poll shows, once again, that most Americans don’t like politics in the pulpit.

Sixty-two percent of the 1,000 adults surveyed said political candidates shouldn’t campaign at religious services.
People “don’t want to see a sermon or something presented as a sermon by a presidential candidate,” says Scott Rasmussen,
whose research group Rasmussen Reports, co-sponsored the poll with the Washington Times.

An even greater percentage, 70 percent, said they don’t want religious leaders to “suggest” whom to vote for. I think it’s fair to
say that people just want to hear a sermon when they go their houses of worship.”

The decline of organized religion continues. Read the rest over at AU.

Happy thanksgiving, and I praise Defcon for enlightening people with the truth of the hypocrisy of the religious right. The Bills of the world are their own downfall. Look at another right wing preacher who is in trouble for a scandel down south. Bill, you can delude yourself all you want and think your brood will have the last laugh. You won’t. You’ll be rebuked and you’ll lose for all the time your kind spend in dividing the country. I am proud to stand against the likes of you and Dobson, and as of now, the USA knows the truth about Bush and the RR. Moderate Christians and everyone who stands for freedom will always be there to keep America what it is. The RR is on the run, and they will not have their America as long as true people keep the American way alive. Good job to everyone who still stands for a Constitution.

I wouldn’t believe much of anything an ignorant bigot from the RR says here, because they have been trying to reshape this country into something is was not meant to be for years now. All the proof of the lies of Bush are on StopBushLies.com. And that is who the RR claimed to love so much. Well, they deserve what they get. They are not true Christians. Carter, Billy Grahm, Pope John Paul, they are the true Christians. Robertson, Falwell, Dobson are false Christians who are attacking the constitution. Christ would love a person for who they are, whether liberal or conservative. Christians are suppose to accept others for different points of view whether in life or religion if one and all strives to bring peace to the world. Defcon fights for freedom
