DefCon: Campaign to Defend The Constitution. Because The Religious Right Is Wrong
During our stem cell campaign, DefCon America ran two full page ads in the New York Times in May and June. Click here to see the ad from May. Click here to see the ad from June.

We also released our first video on YouTube featuring DefCon advisory board member and former NARAL head Kate Michelman's incredible story and by doing all we could to empower the millions of Americans for whom we are fighting. Click here to view the video.

To be sure, the fight for health and hope is not over. In the coming months, this fight will move to the states, where citizens are tired of waiting for a misguided President to do the right thing and have taken the issue into their own hands. Stay tuned to the DefCon Blog for updates.

    Well, well.

    “Some Christian pastors embrace Scientology”
TAMPA, Florida (CNN) — Some Christian congregations, particularly in lower income, urban areas, are turning to an unlikely source for help — the Church of Scientology.

Scientologists do not worship God, much less Jesus Christ. The church has seen plenty of controversy and critics consider it a cult. So why are observant Christians embracing some of its teachings?

Two pastors who spoke recently with CNN explained that when it comes to religion, they still preach the core beliefs of Christianity. But when it comes to practicing what they preach in a modern world, borrowing from Scientology helps…

I understand that in some of our school’s classrooms, police officers that are presenting their stay-off-drugs programs are doing the same thing. I’ll look for that link.

Last week, I posted about how the schools, like the Catholic church, is plagued by sex abuse issues. Here’s another:

“Police seek Nebraska teacher, 25, and 13-year-old boy”

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — Authorities searched Thursday for a 13-year-old boy and a female middle school teacher believed to be on the run from central Nebraska after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship.

Teacher Kelsey Peterson, shown in 2006, is charged with kidnapping and child abuse.

First of all, Scientology is the archetypical example of how tax-exemption for churches can and is being abused. They are a much a church as the KKK is a Christian businessman’s club. The fact that the organization was started by a science fiction writer is the first red flag you encounter when you examine their “religion.” The pastor in Florida said he found Bible verses to back up the Scientology book. Well, why doesn’t he use the Bible verses then? Why would he introduce this literature unless he was gaining something from Scientology in exchange? Regardless, augmenting one mythology with another probably isn’t such a stretch anyway.

I gotta say, Florida is the looniest place I’ve ever been. Every other day somebody from Florida is in the news so doing something bizarre. Just today, flying in the face of the fact that the SCOTUS is about to hear a case that may determine that lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment, the Florida Supreme court ruled that it is NOT cruel and unusual, which will allow Florida to execute an inmate on November 15 — before the Supremes rule — this despite states across the country are suspending executions in light of the case going from the SCOTUS.

Don’t forget, we now have the worst president in the history of our republic thanks to the wonderful voters in Florida (well, specifically the evil Florida Secretary of State, Repukelican Katherine Harris)

CNN Viewers Call For Anti-Bush Revolution, Overthrow Of The Government

    …comments:
    From Raw Story :

CNN commentator Jack Cafferty speculated on Wednesday about how George W. Bush’s unilateral grab for presidential power might be reversed.

“The president of the United States didn’t have the power to spy on Americans … operate secret prisons … suspend due process … torture … hide the conduct of the government from the public,” Cafferty stated. “It’s not like anybody gave President Bush any of these powers — he took them, as a brain-dead Congress just stood there and watched.”

…Cafferty read a selection of emails from clearly outraged — and outspoken — viewers.

“Remember the 60’s?” wrote one Baby Boomer. “Well, they’re back. Only this time it’s not a decade. It’s the age on our driver’s licenses. Let’s start another revolution. … It’s time to overthrow the government.”

Another viewer stated more cynically, “King Bush. Queen Hillary. America is now a democratic dictatorship, nobody is going to change that. Power is everything; get used to it.”

And a third suggested. “George Bush is the next president. He and Darth Cheney will be surrendering none of their bounty. Forty years of planning to hand it all to Hillary Clinton? Not a chance. If you think there’ll be a November 8 election, give my regards to the Easter Bunny.”
    http://lastdaysofpresidentbush.blogspot.com/

I wonder what the conservatives think of the media, now. Though they still fail to even address some very important issues, did anyone ever imagine the day that a major outlet for news would report that viewers are talking about a revolt?

You are wrong about SCHIP and that it is supposed to help “poor” children. It was already helping poor children but then those who are for more government and entitlement programs proposed to increase it to enroll middle class families. Increasing the rolls in the past already caused parents who could afford and were paying for health insurance for their children to stop the coverage and enroll them in the “free” government health insurance. That’s ridiculous. And guess what…it’s not “free”…I’m paying for it. And now the “big government entitlement” crowd wants to increase the rolls to add even more children whose parents can afford to cover their children’s health needs on their own. Why should we tax the American people (me) even more than I’m already taxed to allow other parents to stop paying for their kids’ healthcare coverage so I can pay for it so they can spend more money on fancier cell phones and luxuries? Wake up people.

The booklet notes in small print that it was written by Hubbard as “an individual and is not part of any religious doctrine.”

C.T., I am only hafl-way through the D’Souza rant. It is sooo reassuring that this moron knows what lived in the mind of Hitler. For every remark he makes, there is one that can soundly refute what he states.

“The Nazi idea of an Aryan Christ who uses the sword to cleanse the earth of the Jews-what historians call “Aryan Christianity”-was obviously a radical departure from the traditional Christian understanding and was condemned as such by Pope Pius XI at the time.” vs.

“Conservative author Ann Coulter finds herself in the middle of a firestorm once again after remarks on a CNBC television show in which she said Jews need “to be perfected” and suggested the nation would be better off if it were all-Christian.”

Though slightly different, similarities are there, and as with Naziism, many evangelicals jumpred right to Coulter’s defense saying, “What is wrong with believing this? This is what Christians believe.”

Bellevue teacher’s blend of science honored
    Published: October 26, 2007

Thursday’s science lesson in Paula Fraser’s fifth-grade class at Stevenson Elementary involved testing human enzymes.

But the question Fraser posed to her students was a broader one: “What does it mean to be a human being?”

Fraser, who teaches fifth-graders in the Bellevue School District’s PRISM program for highly capable students, said her goal is to make sure her students go on to think for themselves and make informed decisions

    http://www.goodnewsblog.com/2007/10/26/bellevue-teachers-blend-of-science-honored

    As I posted last night:

Passive acceptance of the teacher’s wisdom is easy to most boys and girls. It involves no effort of independent thought, and seems rational because the teacher knows more than his pupils; it is moreover the way to win the favour of the teacher unless he is a very exceptional man. Yet the habit of passive acceptance is a disastrous one in later life. It causes man to seek and to accept a leader, and to accept as a leader whoever is established in that position.

    -Bertrand Russell

Judging from the article, I’d say that this is one of the exceptional (wo)men, Russell speaks of.

I want to make sure I understand you, JG. You’re saying that we are facing a possible crisis of epic proportions in the Middle East because the Democrats don’t know how to put a legal ballot together. Ahh…it’s amazing how soon they forget. JG - allow me to refresh your memory:

As Secretary of State for the State of Florida, Harris presided over the contested 2000 US presidential election in Florida. There were allegations of conflicts of interest and partisan, unethical behavior by Katherine Harris during the 2000 campaign. Harris had been named as Bush’s Florida campaign co-chair the year before.

In addition, by Harris’ decree, ChoicePoint — a private firm — was hired prior to the election to identify and remove thousands of names from the state voters list on the condition that these people were convicted felons. Many of these would-be voters were turned away at the polls or even prior to reaching the polling places. It would later be discovered that approximately 97% of the people removed from the list — and thus denied the right to vote in the election — were not felons at all. The majority of these voters were African-American, and as African-Americans predominantly vote Democratic, the situation suggested foul play.[13] In any case, the thousands of votes affected by Choicepoint’s error were far in excess of the number of votes (537) by which George W. Bush won the state.

Now - are you SURE you still want to blame our current state of affairs on the Demoncrats? ( Keep in mind - if you answer, “yes” you’ll look like a complete idiot)

Regarding Carter — at least he got the President of Egypt and the PM of Israel to shake hands and agree to begin a peace process. That counts as a GOOD thing. And it doesn’t dimiinish by one iota the fact that Bush is the worst president in the history of our republic. It’s not a partisan issue, JG…I’d say the same about Bush is he were a Demoncrat. He just sucks. Period - plain and simple.

As to your third point. Tenn didn’t swing the election; Florida did. You gottabe kiddin’ me.

Finally, as to your reaction to the Hitler/Christian reference. Dude - that was the headline of Dinesh’s blog piece. Gimme a break. That just shows that you didn’t bother to click the link and read the blog.

Let us not forget, since Jerry G brought it up, that former Ohio corruptioneer, Ken Blackwell also acquired a nice position at FRC after his stint of placing GW nicely into place. He was another Katherine Harris, but had a penis.

Jerry G, you really do have either a short, or a selective memory.

Katherine Harris, the fundie nutcase loony “christian” who thought the baby Jesus wanted Bush to be president, who was Florida’s Sec’y of State during the 2000 elections, managed to arrange that Gore votes not be counted.

The NY Times, after doing its own recount of all the votes, reported in late 2001 that Gore did indeed win in Florida.

Unfortunately, they intentionally put that earthshaking story in an interior page, and did not want to publicize the fact that Gore was the winner after all, because the 9/11 attacks had occurred by then, and the Times did not want to undermine Bush’s presidency.

If the Times had pressed the issue, it’s possible that Bush would have been removed from office, and Gore installed as president.

It was a chilly, late September morning in center Ohio; the sun would be rising in less then an hour. The brisk wind whipped its way though my jacket, I should have worn my trend coat. I was more that pleased when the manager turned the key and I heard the bolt slap and saw the door open. My assignment was to ask for a table away from the windows; the press never let up and Col North had ask us to provide a location with some privacy. I told the server we would need 8 cups when I ordered my coffee, black no sugar and warmed my half frozen hands on the cup when she filled it to the brim.

A few minutes later a familiar man came around the corner, spotted me, nodded and started talking into his sleeve. Col North was only a few minutes away and his lead security agent was establishing his entry and exit route. Ken came into view before the agent was finish, North’s car was notified and we knew he and the others would be joining us in just a few minutes. That’s when it happened; I requested my second cup of the best coffee I had tasted in a long time, and I thawed my motionless hands on fresh cup.

Collins poem that I believe he may have penned at that dinner.

    Some Days
    by Billy Collins

Some days I put the people in their places at the table,

bend their legs at the knees,

if they come with that feature,

and fix them into the tiny wooden chairs.

All afternoon they face one another,

the man in the brown suit,

the woman in the blue dress,

    perfectly motionless, perfectly behaved.

But other days, I am the one

who is lifted up by the ribs,

then lowered into the dining room of a dollhouse

to sit with the others at the long table.

    Very funny,

but how would you like it

if you never knew from one day to the next

if you were going to spend it

striding around like a vivid god,

    your shoulders in the clouds,

or sitting down there amidst the wallpaper,

staring straight ahead with your little plastic face?

“In evaluating the circumstances of the last few days, A&E has decided to take ‘Dog The Bounty Hunter’ off the network’s schedule for the foreseeable future,” the network said in a statement Friday. “We hope that Mr. Chapman continues the healing process that he has begun.”

Albatross, I have loss both of my parents. I’m happy your dad is enjoying the football season and I’m happy for you that you still have your father even if it may be only for a short time.

Where the time comes that a parent draws that last breath the child begans a journey. You’ll discover that there is a piece of your heart missing and your journey will be looking for that missing piece. You will never find it; and your search will never end. You may find yourself rummage around looking, some people thing they find the piece in drugs, alcohol or work, maybe even religion. One day you understand that your heart will never heal you simply learn to life with the piece missing.

I hope his passing is peaceful and his last days filled with love.

    Don Rettmann Says:

    bill reminds me…

I saw an interesting documentary on TV a few nights ago about different species of apes. What was most interesting was how similar chimps and bonobos are to each other. Apparently, ages ago, there had been a large lake in the part of Africa where the bonobos were being studied. The lake drained into a river, and drastically shrank in size, while the river widened,

Today, the bonobos live on the north side of that river, and chimps live on the other side. Scientists think they had a common ancestor, but because of the river, the animals on each side evolved separately.

This is an example of how isolation can lead to a different specie.

  138. November 5th, 2007 at 7:06 am
    Don Rettmann Says:

Bonobos and chimps are physically similar, but chimps are built heavier. More importantly, the social behaviors of the two species are different. Chimps are more aggressive and are often violent towards other tribes of chimps, while bonobos are peaceful.

    All,

Wax takes the time to answer bill and he gets exactly nothing back.
I always give people the benefit of the doubt, as in the case of Mark Jumper, and over time we have been able to find some common ground and for the most part, we are able to make statements and have discussions about them. But Mark operates as an educated adult, for the most part.
I thought perhaps that bill would come around a bit, but that is not going to happen.

Anyone that is going to devote the amount of time bill has devoted with his only intention being to disrupt an uncensored blogsite is in deep emotional water. I have an intimate understanding of this type of individual and I can tell you that you wouldn’t want to be him. He is locked into his belief system and probably hasn’t had any emotional growth for many years. That is what allows him to waste countless hours and all that energy just to disrupt one site. Anyone that thinks that is a good way to spend their time is in trouble.

bill is operating on no more than a seventh grade level and that is easy to see. He has been conditioned well by his handlers and it is obvious that he uses the standard practices of the religious right in his quote mining, obfuscation, and putting words in people’s mouths along with quite a few unethical tactics that you need not be reminded of.
He has not garnered the respect of any person he ever encoutered here, including other fundies- Very funny, that.

Anyone who would spend the countless hours trying to disrupt one site must have a profound fear and hatred for the philosophy of that site, coupled with an irrational and unproductive idea of how to respond to that philosophy.

In the three years this site has been operating, we have never seen anyone so breathtakingly ignorant and rigid post here. bill is a very lunatic fringe. Nobody in their right mind is going to spend that amount of time inanely blathering and disrupting. There are just too many interesting comments and discussions to be had to piss away life.
but, of course, bill must think that he is doing something productive, which proves that he is bat shit crazy.

Having said that, I know there are a few of us that have bonded here and enjoy the interfacing, but don’t forget, there are thousands of sites just like this one. A while back I posted a list of about 75 of them, and every one of them refers several more.
The internet in general is rolling over fundamentalist religions of all types. There are now tens of thousands of blogs and different sites on the subject.

We can start on the sidebar of this site to find a few for starters. I personally, support the FFRF, Theocracy Watch, and others. They in turn have tons of sites listed on their sidebars. Sites that are opposing the religious right are actually too numerous to mention, and no one person can read them all.

Lately, a lot of my time has been spent on a new project that is going to keep me very busy until after the first of the year. As part of this project I will be hiring at least twenty new people. I can tell you that I have ways of finding out who these people are and what they are made out of and I guarantee that not one of them will be a fundamentalist christian. Although I shall stick with the use of the most sophisticated management tools and concepts I have at my disposal, since I have had to sit and watch the antics of these bat shit crazy fundamentalists, it has instilled in me a high degree of resolve to no longer respect any person with that type of concept of religion.
I have bill to credit for finally realizing that there is no compelling reason for respecting the fundamentalists. If bill thinks he deserves respect, he is totally deluded.

Finally, however scarce I may become, I always have all the browsers running that I need to monitor all the sites I like, and I will anxiously be waiting for the next Defcon campaign, whatever it may be.
We did a great job in exposing the Hamseum, and Ken Ham in general. The Stem cell campaign was an extraordinary success and a pleasure to have played a small part in it, not to mention all the letter writing and phone campaigns.

As in any organization, goals and finances change, and Defcon has had no one single incident to bring to national attention lately but we will again in the future as needed.

For now, the religious right is on the run. They have hung their hat on a political figure and it has doomed them for now. This is a very funny development because King Dobson thought until just recently that the republican party would bow to his wishes but he is being ignored…. By the party that he feels he owns! Too bad Jimmy boy. We tried to tell you, by tying your religion to politics, you corrupted your religion.
When the fundamentalists figure out that when they go to their churches and act like christians, they will get the respect that they command for that, but when they jump into politics, then they will be treated like the power hungry bigots that they are.
The RR has shown us a very valuable lesson. Our secular government allows us to elect our leaders. The RR leaders are family dynasties like the kings of Europe and they all too often outlive their own usefulness as their superegos overtake and delude them.

Peace to all my friends and keep up the great work !

There are some great parallels between what you do to get saved and in what you do to get married.

    Do what married people did

A man sees a married couple and says, “That man lives with a woman, has children, supports a wife, I am going to start living with a woman, have children, support a wife so I can be married.. NO, you dont do that to become married, you become married and then do all of that becasue you are married.

    Do what saved people do
A man sees a Christian and says, “He joined a church, got baptized, gives to the church, and is a Christian so I am going to join the church, get baptized and give to the church so I can be saved. NO. You must understand God loves you, sent His Son, the Lord Jesus to suffer and die for your sins, paid you debt in full, was buried, rose again and was seen by hundreds of people so you could be saved and then do those things becasue you are saved, not to get saved.

    What would you say
If you went up to the gates of heaven and they asked, “Why should we let you in, what would you say?” I have asked this hundreds upon hundreds of times and most answered, ” I do the best I can, I try to be a Christian, I don’t do anything really bad” and think they are saved for what they do. NO, you must believe what the Lord Jesus did, paid your way to heaven, trust that and receive the Lord Jesus as yuou Savior, just as a man says, “Yes, I will take this woman to be my wife” and get married so he can live with a woman and have chilren as God intended man to do.

    Do it right now
If you really understand Christ died for your sins, paid your way in full and rose again, Tell God right now, I believe on the Lord Jesus as my Savior too and want to receive Him as my Savior so I can go to heaven. Write and tell me about it. God loves you and so do I, All Because of Calvary, Sumner
