DefCon: Campaign to Defend The Constitution. Because The Religious Right Is Wrong
During our stem cell campaign, DefCon America ran two full page ads in the New York Times in May and June. Click here to see the ad from May. Click here to see the ad from June.

We also released our first video on YouTube featuring DefCon advisory board member and former NARAL head Kate Michelman's incredible story and by doing all we could to empower the millions of Americans for whom we are fighting. Click here to view the video.

To be sure, the fight for health and hope is not over. In the coming months, this fight will move to the states, where citizens are tired of waiting for a misguided President to do the right thing and have taken the issue into their own hands. Stay tuned to the DefCon Blog for updates.

After John Scazi’s report on the Hamseum yestersay, today he blogs:

“In the aftermath of yesterday’s Creation Museum report, I’m getting comments and e-mails from Christians who are both thanking me for taking the hit for the team and also wanting to make sure I don’t think all Christians believe in creationist clap-trap. My response to both of these:
    1. You’re welcome.
    2. Of course not.
And toward the latter, I do think it’s worth reminding other folks that making the lazy equivalence between creationists and Christians is not a smart thing to do.
Indeed, it’s worth noting that creationism isn’t even inherently Christian; [My bold] here’s some Islamic creationism in Turkey for you to chew on, had you not been aware it existed.
I’m sure it will absolutely delight most creationists here in the US to know they have common cause with these Islamic counterparts.

I had this date marked on my calender for some time now, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the folks over at NOVA produced this.

At the time of the Kitzmiller v Dover trial, the ALCU posted transcripts of each day’s proceedings. It was the only trial I ever read every word of transcrpts. That trial was like a modern day version of the Scopes Monkey Trial and shouldl have set up a very important precedent. It was fascinating to follow. The ACLU attorney’s made mincemeat out of the Thomas Moore Law center attorneys. And a good time was had by all!

There is not any group or person in this good country that they have not defended in one way or another.
They are not perfect, nor am I, by a longsight.
The ACLU stands for nothing more than the very conservative isea that we should maintain and interpret the constitution as written by some very wise dudes, back in the day.
That ol’ constitution has served us very well, and this writer will submit that our founding document should be very adequate to propel us into the next century.(but I will be dead, of course.)

    Albatross Says:

    Ahh. Found the problem.

    The 14 characteristics are:

    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; sociali*ts, terrorists, etc.

    4. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

    5. Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

    6. Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

    7. Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.

    9. Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

    10. Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed .

    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

    14. Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

I’m not certain it could never happen here, Dale.

    Alba,
    RE: You 11:18 PM comment

Thanks for posting that. A good overview.
I especially like #8. When the government choses the majority religion to support government mainipulation of public opinion, at the outset, that particular religion is usually very happy to accomodate them. That happened in Iran in 1979 when they threw the shaw out and took on sharia law. Now though, after all these years of suppression, the citizens are getting fed up with the whole mess. As JW has alluded, it looks like they are headed for a revolution. In my opinion though, any rebellion will be met an beat down mercilessly by the “good religious government.”

Religious leadership of any kind is usually not a democratic process. These new megachurches and fundamentalist entities are normally personality cults. They become family dynasties. If it were not for that pesky ol’ first ammendment they would be fighting tooth and nail for ultimate control.

The vast majority of mainstream Americans are just out there doing their thing every day and as long as they are not being fu*ked with, they are silent. But if a real threat emerges they will come to life to keep the status quo.

But, it’s the radical bastards like us, out here in the front line trenches that keep the christo-religio-facist- fundamentalists in line so everybody else can sit back and watch Seinfield or Friends or whatever they do.

    JW Says:

Great Documentary. I am Jack’s total lack of surprise. Even a judge recomended by Rick Santorum and put on the bench by GW could see ID is creationism. And the wonderful “Christians” who supported adding this crap to our schools had no shame while lying, on the stand, and under oath. Why is it I think this is TYPICAL? Sad state of affairs for the fundies, pathetic lying whackos that they are.

“You both know I wholeheartedly agree, but the Phelps family? Nasty bastards. Dog shit on new shoes.”

Yes Alba, they are. But this is, again, the difference between us and Bill. Bill thinks disliking someones morals or speech is a reason to legislate HIS beliefs, and undermine other’s constitutional rights. Those of us who believe in the Constitution as our litmus test for laws, rather than the bible, understand that as much as we hate what Phelps and his hate spewing communitiy say, they have a right to do it. And many people like this are Christian. It is only the fundies, like Falwell, Robertson, Santorum, and Bill, who dont seem to understand.

On the flip side I understand them perfectly. As the woman who runs the radio station in Pa said in the documentary last night…”If you believe in heaven and hell, nothing else matters.”

  47. November 14th, 2007 at 10:48 am
    dale Says:

    CT said:

“Listening to him (Buckingham) reminded me so much of reading bill’s posts. ”

It is amazing how the fundies all say the same things in the same manner.
When the source for irrational belief system is only one book, that doesn’t provide them with many salient arguments, especially when the book is an ancient collection of myths. So by definition alone, they must resort to the doubletalk, inuendo, circular reasoning, etc.
Another tactic that they employ to take the heat off themselves was executed by bill on the previous thread. He asks 15 questions all in one comment, very technical questions that would take much time to answer, I call it the “swamp their boat trick.” Of course all of those questions COULD be answered by merely saying “god did it.”

Now that brings us back to the question of intelligence. This comes up here from time to time and I would like to address it once again.
If you take a person of exactly average intelligence, you will have a person that is never going to be a scientist of any kind. People of average intelligence do not posess the wherewithall, the intellectual capacity to do the higher math and complete the rigorous academic requirements. People of strictly average intelligence usually have problems aquiring a bona fide baccalaureate degree of any kind, let alone post graduate level work.
It is well shown that average, C and B- students fail out of college in the first two semesters. That is not a criticism, it’s just the way it is (of course there is a persentage of above average intelligence kids that do not want to go to college, or drop out early, for a plethora of reasons - see bill Gates for one.) Those kids go on to be tradespeople, assistants in technology of all kinds, and well respected people at that.
So, say you are an average guy or gal, then half of the people you know are less intelligent than you- Half!
That half survive on their willingness to learn on the job stuff and their success depends more on their emotional intelligence than anything else- how they get along with people. But since they have far less capability for critical thinking and logic, they are the predominant audience for thechristo-facist babble.

That brings me back to the subject of this comment. CT commented, “That guy Buckingham has to be the biggest ……….” Well, you see, guys like Buckingham are accustomed to spouting their crackpottery to the average and under intellect crowd, and it is recieved because it “sounds nice and warm and fuzzy to them- and darn it, they wanna believe it.
But when someone like Buckingham starts talking this shit to a judge, or above average itellect crowd, they are seen for what they are- crackpots and liars. Tammy Kitzmiller wasn’t buying his shit either, and to her my hat is off for her courage and tenacity to see this case through.

“Listening to him (Buckingham) reminded me so much of reading bill’s posts. ”
The difference is that Buckingham is a fairly intelligent sort with a misguided agenda, where bill is an intellectually stunted dupe for Ken Ham, but it is interesting how they all use the same words and phrases, like trained parrots. Pity, that.
It is easy to see that bill falls into the way under average intelligence group. He cannot spell or conjugate verbs. His prose and syntax are atrocious. He always misses meanings of words written by others and slaughters the meanings of words he writes. He doesn’t even have the ability to form opinions about the stuff that he constantly copies and pastes to this site. He even copies and pastes stuff that he hasn’t read (or can’t understand) that actually support the opposition! Then there is that matter of the infantile manerisms that he acts out like some third grader. He does not even have the ability to get outside himself and look at his actions and or conduct any type of personal self evaluation. He will never be able to see how absurd he is.

    Albatross Says:

DI is contemplating legal action against PBS for “injecting religion into the classroom teaching about evolution.” PBS has provided an accompanying briefing packet for the NOVA documentary and it includes the following:

“Can you accept evolution and still believe in religion?”

“Yes. The common view that evolution is anti-religious is simply false. All that evolution tells us is that life on this planet could have arisen by natural processes. For many people of various faiths, showing that something is due to a natural process doesn’t take it outside the realm of the divine. Religious thinkers across the ages have written that merely showing that something is natural puts it within the influence of God, the creator of all nature. By definition science cannot address supernatural causes because its methodology is confined to the natural world. Therefore science has nothing to say about the nature of God or about people’s spiritual beliefs. This does not mean science is anti-religious; rather it means science cannot engage in this level of explanation.”

DI was going to have a press conference yesterday to reveal the findings of the 16 attorneys, but it seems Casey Luskin came down with a case of laryngitis. My sympathies to you, Mr. Luskin.

The Nova site has the link up for the Judgement day report. It will be active on the 16th.

If the creationists are as interested in teaching the controversy as they say they are, they should show this in their churches and sunday schools.

    Capital idea, JW!

Here is a comment on the show from Ed Brayton’s site:

…………. The proponents of ID and creationism for the most part were hung by their own words. Their attorneys looked like fools and the primary promoters of ID on the school board, Buckingham and Bonsell, did themselves no favors either in their interviews or the recorded comments from the trial transcript or the depositions. Yet they were given full time to explain their views. If there was any lack of balance, the program didn’t invest much effort in examining why those opposed to evolution are so overwrought emotionally over the issue, how they commonly perceive it– ignorantly I might add–as a mortal threat to their religion.
    Posted by: Keanus | November 14, 2007 5:39 PM

It is important to note that the fundies are claiming the report was unbalanced because almost none of the plaintifs were interviewed. They conveniently omit that none of the plaintifs would consent to an interview.
If you think the fundie priestcraft are not lying behind the backs of their cash flow, just look what they do in a nationally important court case.
This is the most seminal court decision in my career as an anti-theocracy, pro-constitutionalist radical bastard.
This case will keep the creationist/ IDiots at bay for at least the next fifty years and by that time everybody will know better- thanks to the internet.
Every step in the technology of the disemination of knowledge in human history has come with a watering down of superstion and all sorts of irrational belief systems.
Three hundred years ago, everybody was superstitious about something. These days the rationalists are increasingly becoming the majority. But don’t worry, us DefConites will allow you fundies your right to practice your fairy tale beliefs. Promise.

I let my teenage daughter stay up late just to watch Nova. Without any input from me, she had no trouble poking holes in the arguments of Behe and the other IDiots on the show. The hypocrisy was also crystal-clear. I especially liked how these supposed “Christians” sent death threats to the science teachers and the judge. Yeah - way to be Christ-like, assholes. Really living up to the Good Book there. And the perjury, and the blatant lies. I also loved it when the guy playing Behe spouted all that “irreducible complexity” crapola, claiming that evolution has never been able to explain the development of the human immune system. When the lawyer started piling science publications explaining the evolution of the immune system in front of Behe, the look on they guy’s face was priceless. I also loved how, when backed into a corner over the utter falsity of ID, they immediately lapsed into vulgar name-calling and petulant pouting. Priceless!

School boards will now be less inclined to even think about challenging evolution teaching in their schools. In fact, with the setbacks in Pennsylvania and other states like Ohio and Georgia (where in the latter the very questioning of evolution as a fact in a textbook sticker led to a court battle), evolution will probably be taught with even greater fervor in America’s science classes.

    Bill_from_defcon Says:

What constitutes a definition of fascism and fascist governments is a highly disputed subject that has proved complicated and contentious. Historians, political scientists, and other scholars have engaged in long and furious debates concerning the exact nature of fascism and its core tenets.
Most scholars agree that a “fascist regime” is foremost an authoritarian form of government, although not all authoritarian regimes are fascist. Authoritarianism is thus a defining characteristic, but most scholars will say that more distinguishing traits are needed to make an authoritarian regime fascist.
Similarly, fascism as an ideology is also hard to define. Originally, “fascism” referred to a political movement that existed in a single country (Italy) for less than 30 years and ruled the country from 1922 to 1943 under the leadership of Benito Mussolini. Clearly, if the definition is restricted to the original Italian Fascism, then “fascism” has little significance outside of Italian politics. Most scholars prefer to use the word “fascism” in a more general sense, to refer to an ideology (or group of ideologies) that was influential in many countries at many different times. For this purpose, they have sought to identify a “fascist minimum” - that is, the minimum conditions that a certain political group must meet in order to be considered fascist.

The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism–ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power

Why do you suppose church leaders meet with the POTUS to discuss foreign affairs such as the war? Why do you suppose missionaries are on the heels of the military everywhere they go…almost as if the govt is paving the way for the installation of the religion that will be preached to the choir…most ALWAYS Christianity.

Your 7:44, total crock of shit.

  108. November 16th, 2007 at 8:47 pm
    Albatross Says:

    he 14 characteristics are:

    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
“If you’re not with us you’re against us.” Suspect your non-Christian neighbors as being the “enemy,” or supporting the “enemy, as we are a nation founded on Christianity.” NOT.

    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture(Abu Gharib), summary executions, assassinations (Pat Robertson publicly calls for execution of Venezuela’s president), long incarcerations of prisoners (no need for further elaboration), etc.

(Oops we left out the pro-choicers and the homosexuals)

    4. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. (What is our federal deficit again? How many of our children have no health insurance, or go to bed hungry?)

    5. Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy. (If you’d like to talk about Clinton/Lewinsky, Bill, perhaps we could revive the Thomas/Hill affair.)

    6. Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
    (FAUX NEWS at your service!)

    7. Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
(Stop Ted Kennedy at the airport. Every time you do, allow 100,000 Mexicans across the border without question.)

    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.
    (This needs no further comment.)

    9. Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
(Again, no comment necessary - except to say Blackwater, Haliburton, Enron, etc)

(ID/Creationism vs. real science, abstinence vs. comprehensive sex ed., Bible literacy??!!)

    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
(Sure, monitor my calls and emails…no problem.)

Again, no comment necessary. Just look at the administration for the proof in the pudding.)

    (You’re ignorant, Bill.)

“AIG Admits Defeat at Dover Trial”

Ken Looy, one of Ham’s psychophants, has an article up at AIG, which is full of distortions and inuendo, but admits:

“More distressing is the long-term impact this trial will have, and which the documentary helps forecast. An apparent precedent has been set in a federal court about the dominance of evolution teaching in public schools. School boards will now be less inclined to even think about challenging evolution teaching in their schools. In fact, with the setbacks in Pennsylvania and other states like Ohio and Georgia (where in the latter the very questioning of evolution as a fact in a textbook sticker led to a court battle), evolution will probably be taught with even greater fervor in America’s science classes.”

Evolution is never taught “with fervor.” Science is taught as science finds the natural world; one step, one discovery at a time.
    In other words, we won.

    Chorus:
    Jesus paid it all
    All to Him I owe
Sin hath left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

    Lord, now indeed I find
    Thy power and Thine alone
    Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone

    For nothing good have I
    Whereby Thy grace to claim
    I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calvary’s Lamb

    And when before thy throne
    I stand in Him complete
Jesus died my soul to save
    My lips shall still repeat

“Lifting the Klan mask revealed a chaotic multitude of antiblack vigilante groups, disgruntled poor white farmers, wartime guerrilla bands, displaced Democratic politicians,

illegal whiskey distillers, coercive moral reformers, bored young men, sadists, rapists, white workmen fearful of black competition, employers trying to enforce labor discipline, common thieves, neighbors with decades-old grudges, and

even a few freedmen and white Republicans who allied with Democratic whites or had criminal agendas of their own. Indeed, all they had in common, besides being overwhelmingly white, southern, and Democratic, was that they called themselves, or were called, Klansmen.
