DefCon: Campaign to Defend The Constitution. Because The Religious Right Is Wrong
During our stem cell campaign, DefCon America ran two full page ads in the New York Times in May and June. Click here to see the ad from May. Click here to see the ad from June.

We also released our first video on YouTube featuring DefCon advisory board member and former NARAL head Kate Michelman's incredible story and by doing all we could to empower the millions of Americans for whom we are fighting. Click here to view the video.

To be sure, the fight for health and hope is not over. In the coming months, this fight will move to the states, where citizens are tired of waiting for a misguided President to do the right thing and have taken the issue into their own hands. Stay tuned to the DefCon Blog for updates.

We should model ourselves in the likeness of the Sweeds. They know how to deal with these Christian nut jobs. Its to bad we have a constitution!

This week in Sweden, according to “The Local” (an English-language Swedish news agency), the centre-right coalition government decided to ban biology teachers from teaching creationism or intelligent design alongside evolution in independent schools, which includes Christian schools. There is already such a ban in place in its state government schools (called public schools in the U.S.).

U.K. and U.S. readers may be puzzled as to how the Swedish government can ban something from independent schools such as Christian schools. This is because independent schools in Sweden are not fully independent. While an independent school is privately owned, it receives a grant from the government, which can then determine the school’s curriculum.

It is my opinion that if we did not have the constitution, and thus the first ammendment, our country would be akin to Iraq with all the christian sects engaged in civil war for domination.

    Lou,
For the first time in a long time, I agree with Dale. However, not on the same principles.

It looks like you don’t like Christian, period. That is one reason we have the 1st admemdment protecting the freedom of Religion.

Unfortunately, atheist are using it to get rid of all Christianity from the public square.

I don’t know about you but I would like to be able to choose whether or not I am a Christian or not. You also have the choice to become an athiest.

In the Islamic countries, they don’t have that choice. Either you become a Muslim or you die.

    C.T. Says:

Not completely accurate, brian. There are in fact, Christians AND Jews not only in Iraq, but also Iran. AND China and Russia. Granted, they are minorities, granted, many are persecuted, and yes, some are killed by lawless criminals who escape prosecution (like in Egypt, for example) but your blanket assertion that in Islamic countries you don’t have a choice - convert or be executed is a gross exaggeration. It’s simply not the case.

    Brian,
There is much confusion within the christian community which Old Testament admonishments shoud and should not be part of the dogma. Most christians embrace the ten commandments, yet many say that our country’s laws are based on the ten commandments.
We have Govenors who wish the Ten Commandments to be posted in cout houses, yet seven of the Ten Commandments are unconstitutional.

Which is it? Did the New Testament free us from the old law or not?
Jesus said, when asked if the old testament was still in force, “every jot and title.”

Brian, dale has ask a fair question of us who claim to be Christians. However, I’m thinking dale meant every jot and tittle not TITLE.

Also, I can only find two passages where Christ used the word tittle and if dale is talking about Matthew 5:18 or Luke 16:17 he is missing the point of those passages.

Back to dale’s point, “Did the New Testament free us from the old law or not?”

The tradition of martyrdom in Christianity is very crucial as Jesus is the father of martyrs. Jesus was never a passive person. He did not treat others badly when he was badly treated and he often did not accept what others said and did. In Christianity a martyr believes in an invisible reward.

CHAPTER XLV.—IT IS THE PART OF THE WICKED TO VEX THE RIGHTEOUS.
The hateful, and those full of all wickedness, were roused to such a pitch of fury, that they inflicted torture on those who served God with a holy and blameless purpose [of heart], not knowing that the Most High is the Defender and Protector of all such as with a pure conscience venerate His all-excellent name; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. But they who with confidence endured [these things] are now heirs of glory and honour, and have been exalted and made illustrious by God in their memorial for ever and ever. Amen.

And as far as Matt. 5:18 is concerned — I disagree with you and I don’t think dale missed the point at all. I know YOU believe that Jesus “fulfilled” the law, therefore it doesn’t apply to you or your fellow fundies….so then - the question remains, why - if the law of the OT is fulfilled, do fundies refer to Deut. whenever they want to persecute a gay or lesbian person? or even someone who gets a tattoo or reads their horoscope? And why is it, the same people who pronounce judgement upon “sinners” fail to follow the admonishment of the Biblical Jesus who says “judge not, lest ye be judged” ?? Why do these Xtians eat pork and round the corners of their heads? You guys always want it both ways. You see the Bible as a bargain basement — to be picked through for the things that suit you and to ignore the things that don’t.

    Cherokee Indian Fatherhood

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth’s rite of passage?

His dad takes him into the forest - blindfolded - and leaves him. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not take off the blindfold until the ray of sun shines through it. He is all by himself. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN.

He cannot tell the other boys of this experience. Each must come into his own manhood. The boy was terrified. He could hear all kinds of noise. Beasts were all around him. Maybe even some human would hurt him. The wind blew the grass and it shook his stump. But he sat stoically… .. never removing the blindfold. It was the only way he could become a man.

Finally, after a horrific night, sounds of the night disappeared. He could feel the warmth of the sun. He removed his blindfold.

It was then that he saw…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal jury decided Friday that a woman convicted of killing an expectant mother and cutting the baby from her womb should receive the death penalty.

Now, who’d a thunk they’d find 12 non-believers on one jury in Kansas City, MO? I mean, what are the odds? You’d think there’d be at least ONE Christian in the bunch who, of course, because of their faith in the inerrant word of God — especially the almighty 1O commandments, would refuse to condemn a person to death. What Christian would deem themselves smarter that Jesus and refuse to allow a person to repent and be forgiven? Do Christians hate jury duty? Aren’t they supposed to render unto Caesar?

No - wait….that’s right. Many Christians don’t believe in a woman’s right to choose to abort because it is, to them, murder. But condemn a person to death by electrocution, hanging or torturous lethal injection, because they have been convinced by a prosecutor that the accused is guilty of a capital crime….no problem… let ‘em rot.

“What we object to is Christians passing a law that requires the public school teacher to stop teaching during instructional time, paid for by the taxpayers, so that Christians can pray,” Sherman told The Associated Press.

WTF? The fundies just cannot resist trying to impose their silly beliefs on everybody else.
Why do they have to have a state law that says the kids have to have a moment to pray- or whatever?
If I am a fundy and I want my kid to pray, I have countless hours of the days and weekends to pray. This is just another wedge issue. They do every thing they can to get something- anything- injected into the school. Next thing you know and they will be pushing to have THER prayers recited. This is unconstitutional

I repect religious people that practice their beliefs at home in church, anywhere they want, but when they want to foist it onto my kids in the public school, I will fight them. They are arrogant sons of bitches as far as I am concerned. They know if they get these kids accustomed to their rituals at an early age, it will be easier to control them later- make no mystake about it.

Defcon has supported some very important letter writing campaigns and petitions in the past to help create awareness of political candidates who are anti-constitutionalists and in particular Theocrats.
On finding that Jindal was elected in LA, I started doing some checking on governors campaigns to find that we have a theocrat running for govenor of Mississippi and not one word of this has been mentioned here by Defcon manangement.
It seems that although some of the blogs have been pertinent, they have been rather irrelevent to the core interest of the blog.
    Govenors Are Future Presidents, People.
I damn near perished when I just learned that one John Eaves is running in LA and reading his own site their is an article, “Who’s On Jesus’ Side in Mississippi?”
This article is absolutely anti-constitutional and it looks to me at first glance to be one of the most theocratic campaigns we have seen. Put on your tin foil hats because reading this may turn your brain to mush.

I was just talking with my wife about he days when we moved into a new place surrouded by all those boxes and stuff. While it was rather stressful at the time it does evoke fond memories. And now, years later, I think there are still a few boxes stashed here and there tha have never been unpacked!

When my Father died, I inherited his entire library. That was four years ago and I am still sifting through all that stuff. Some of it is shared interests and becomes incorporated into my library. But, the rest resides in “limbo” so to speak, as I disseminate it all.
I have found a book trading group that circulates all those books and papers and they seem to be glad to have it.
Since my father always said that “A book is not doing any good unless somebody is reading it,” I am very happy that the parts of his library that I am not able to keep, are being circulated.

My mother-in-law was the kind of person who would say, “What color would you like, and 8 toasters would come down when someone said their toaster broke. For polyamorists, three’s not a crowd; it’s just the start
    By Andrea Useem

(UNDATED) By day, he’s an Atlanta real estate investor, a member of a Methodist church, the son of a Southern Baptist pastor and a self-described political conservative. After hours, he’s known as “Mr. Big,” a columnist for PolyamoryOnline.org. His family — a wife and five children — lives with another couple, who have four children. Each husband is romantically involved with both wives, and vice versa. “Our family has to keep things behind a little bit of a veil,” he said, asking that his name not be used to help protect his children’s privacy. “Nobody wants to hear about your sex life at church.” That veil may be lifting — however slightly and slowly — as faith-minded polyamorists come out of the sexual closet. Mr. Big is just one of many polyamorists who say their multiple romantic relationships are intimately linked to their faith and values, even as their celebration of non-monogamy often earns a cool or hostile reception from others.

    Interesting? Double standards? Christian?

  111. October 27th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
    Albatross Says:

You’ve said that before, Dale. I often wonder what my kids would do when confronted with my little “library.” Maybe they’d actually read the books, just to see where I gained my inspirations from. My husband and I have already had little spats about where the bookcases will go. (And how they will actually be filled with books, not just knick-knacks, though I am a collector of abandoned bird’s nests as well as books.)

    C.T. Says:

This is why nobody pays attention to bill. the link he provided goes to an AIG story that concludes that violence in schools is the fault of children being taught evolution, because evolution supposedly teaches that violence is inevitable whereas the Bible explains that violence is the result of sin… the implication being, I suppose, if everyone were born-again Christians, our aversion to sin would prevent anyone from being violent. Somehow, I think the crusaders missed that message. And the KKK and the Operation Rescue nuts and on and on.

It is very funny, actually. I have expressed in the past one of my favorite times at DefCon is when the Founding Fathers and their intentions becomes the debate. My Dad is a major history buff. His favoritism lies with later times than the founding, but he and I have had many lengthy conversations/debates in this area, as well as present political situations. I will miss him.

Alba — five years ago, my sister called me and asked me to come back east and help my mom care for my dad, whom the doctors had given a year to live. That was one month after 911 and the whole world was in a funk. I got almost 8 months with him and one night while helping him to bed, he collapsed as his heart failed and fell into my arms - dead. I feel like I am the luckiest man in the world to have been able to be there for him and my mom and especially on the night he passed.
I hope you’ll be able to act like each day is just another day — business as usual - right up to the end, so he can feel normal and not as a burden. I hope you’ll be able to help him go having a good time. The night my dad died, we watched a movie and shared a brandy. We did that nearly every night. You never know when the last one will be, so enjoy every one you get. I still have the bottle and every year on the anniversary of his death, I drink a shot for my dad.
I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met over the years who are completely estranged from their parents. In my opinion, there is nothing better than family and I’m extremely fortunate to have a good relationship with everyone in mine. I think what you said to your dad about being everything you hoped for was a beautiful thing and brought tears to my eyes. Stay up.

Religious Dignitaries: Violence in God’s Name is ‘Blasphemy’

Violence committed in God’s name is “blasphemy,” dignitaries of the world’s main religions said as they wrapped up a “peace summit” in Naples on Tuesday, according to a story carried by Agence France-Presse. “We can say with more emphasis than before that whoever uses God’s name to hate others, to commit violent acts, to make war, blasphemes the name of God,” the some 300 Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu leaders and political figures said in a joint declaration. The three-day summit on the theme “A World Without Violence: Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue,” is an annual event organized by the Rome-based lay Catholic community Sant’Egidio.

Tell Ken Ham, Dr. Dobson, Pat Robertson, etc, to stick this statement up their asses, as they and his ilk are well-known for the diversity that they cause. Diversity creates hatred toward others. Poor intolerant, egotistical, radical fundamentalists - you reap what you sow.

I really get sick of these Christian apologists who compoletely ignore the established facts of science and the recorded truths of history when they attempt to justify their mythology. Conservatives left without a voice on ‘The View’

By Joanna Weiss, Boston Globe Staff | October 25, 2007

Who is America’s most dangerous conservative?

Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the apple-cheeked blonde with the football-player husband, consistently draws a brand of hatred from the left that Hillary Clinton generates from the right; “screechmonger” is one of the more printable slurs hurled at her from the blogosphere. Barry Manilow has called her “offensive.” Alicia Silverstone once refused to touch her. And that an America’s sweetheart-type would generate such vitriol says a lot about the state of debate in a polarized country.

A yearlong investigation of televangelist Pat Robertson’s activities in Africa is now over, but state officials are sitting on the final report pending a review by attorneys, reports the Virginian-Pilot newspaper. The probe focused on possible inappropriate activities involving Robertson’s Operation Blessing outreach, and a private corporation he operated known as the African Development Co. Based in Zaire, the firm was established by Robertson during the rule of the late dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. The two men established close ties, and Mobutu wined and dined Robertson during one visit to the country; ADC also received vast forestry and mineral concessions, but the diamond mining operation eventually went bankrupt. Mobutu, after a quarter-century of iron fisted rule, died last year in exile from cancer. He left Zaire bankrupt and impoverished, and since 1994 had even been considered persona non grata in the United States.

In April, 1997 two pilots who worked for Operation Blessing charged that planes linked to Robertson and his ministry flew mostly to haul equipment for ADC’s private diamond operation. Robert Hinkle, the chief pilot told reporter Bill Sizemore that of about 40 flights within Zaire during the half-year period he was there, “Only one or at most two” were related to the humanitarian mission of Operation Blessing. The rest were “mining-related.”

“We got over there and we had ‘Operation Blessing’ painted on the tails of the airplanes, Hinkle told the Virginian-Pilot, “but we were doing no humanitarian relief at all. We were just supplying the miners and flying the dredges from Kinshasa out to Tdshikapa.”
