Adultery Is Ok, As Long As You Say You’re Sorry
When revelations surfaced this week about Louisiana Senator David Vitter’s (repeated) use of prostitutes, one of the first to come to his defense was none other than Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins, who both defended Vitter in an AP article, and followed up with a blog posting where he said:
The American people have shown themselves to be very forgiving toward a public official who admits their failures and takes redemptive steps. And despite what some have said since he released his statement, so does God. Proverbs 24:16 reads “For a righteous man many fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.” I hope to see David back on his feet again.
Interesting, who knew that the use of a prostitute was in line with FRC’s emphasis on “family values?” Perkins’s defense of Vitter is especially amusing, given the full-fledged campaign against pornography in hotel rooms that FRC continues to run. In fact, just last week, Perkins was quoted in the press criticizing Governor Mitt Romney for not doing enough to stop Marriott Hotels from allowing pornography in their rooms.
So, just to recap: it’s ok to sleep with a prostitute if you say you are sorry, but it is definitely not ok to offer pornography in hotel rooms. Good to know.

This isn’t a “sin” - it is a crime. Has Mr. Perkins encouraged Senator Vitter to turn himself in for his crimes? News reports indicate he is a repeat offender.
…perhaps a sexual predator and evil soul as described by his own faith. LOL–gotta laugh out loud
One politician tried to explain how lonely is was for these elected officials to be away from their families while they so nobly servie our country in D.C. Poor guys. Maybe we should let them use tax-payer dollars to finance their lonelines therapy.
C.T., dear, dear, C.T., we do finance their “loneliness therapy.”
Looks like they’re going to have to pay for larger Commandment monuments, so they can include all the exceptions to the rules.
I still laugh when I think of the Alabama courthouse monument where they spelled adultery wrong. I guess if you spell it wrong, it leaves wiggle room as to whether it really is a sin or not.
GAHHHHHHHHHHH! Ha Ha, cought you. You spelled adultry wrong!
Hang your head in shame Alba!
Thou shalt use thy spell checker lest thy be accused of being churlish and lazy !
Oh shit. I’m toast….
I want that post back!!!!
Can’t have it :-p. Are you by any chance in Alabama, Dale?? Hee hee.
Hey! It looks like the FRC blog now accepts comments…even those with dissenting views.
“For a righteous man many fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.”
Seven?
My guess, Ian, is that this means a male senator can actually pork a prostitute seven times before it is an outright calamity
By superstitious beliefs, seven is the lucky number.
Dale,
You don’t have to hide - I won’t beat you up…severely.
Alba,
I checked out the FRC blog and there are a couple decent discussions going on; some pithy comments too, but well behaved.
Faux news and several other sources are reporting that Larry Flynt is currently investigating more acts of immorality by Congressmen, and believes there is credible information on others. In what he calls “payback time,” he also makes it clear that this is not a witchhunt, just a serious effort to weed out hyposcrisy.
“I don’t want a man like that legislating for me, especially in the areas of morality,” he said.
http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_6350814
There, I agree with him.
Dale, it is absolutely hysterical that there are posters there saying they believe that this is between Vitter, his wife, and God!
Does anybody care to recall BILL CLINTON? That was certainly not left between him, his wife, and God?
Boy, it is absolutely astounding how they flip-flop on where and when morality is at issue, let alone the law!
Asked whether she could forgive her husband after an extramarital affair, as Livingston’s wife had done, Wendy Vitter told the Times-Picayune: “I’m a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary [Clinton]. If he does something like that, I’m walking away with one thing, and it’s not alimony, trust me.”…after Sen. John Breaux, D-La., announced in 2003 that he wouldn’t seek re-election, Vitter within days announced he would run to succeed him, and the national GOP did everything it could to clear the way for the man who said he represented “mainstream Louisiana values.”

Even a mysoginist can have a good day! More importantly he is very honest about his enterprise–I can respect this characteristic. What gauls him and myself as well is the blatant hypocracy WE fall victim to from these wack jobs.
Other then that, I have no opinion. :~)
I agree, Waxxer. They spent a lot of energy going after Flynt. If he now has the resources to reveal the hypocrisies of the “Do as I say, not as I do” crowd, I wish him the very best of luck
hypocrisy among politicians!

Yahweh,
If there is no pharmacalogical remedy for being Aghast then there must be a religious remedy. Think about it if the RR can sneak out and play with god of the human phallus then you should be able to relieve your ghastliness through a constructive method that does not leave DNA in bizare or suspect places.

Eliza,
You said - “So, just to recap: it’s ok to sleep with a prostitute if you say you are sorry, but it is definitely not ok to offer pornography in hotel rooms. Good to know.”
Either you’ve been taking morality lessons from Clark, or you just didn’t listen when your Momma was teaching you right and wrong. Which is it?
Mark, last time I checked pornography is legal, fully protected free speech. Prostitution on the other hand is illegal. I think the point of the post is - Do we really want a Senator legislating morality for the rest of us when he can’t keep his pecker in his pocket?
Your Momma obviously didn’t teach you that laws aren’t based on your idealogical beliefs.
I SUSPECT MJ and his momma have been intimate—and it has made all the differenece!
MJ - These are morality lessons from Senator Vitter. To recap: he has opposed AIDS prevention for sex wokers but frequented prostitutes himself. I don’t care if God, his wife, and Tony Perkins forgive him. Heck, I don’t care if he keeps seeing prostitutes. Here’s what bothers me: (a) he has sex with prostitutes (repeatedly) (b) he votes to withold disease prevention assistance from prostitutes and (c) he, Mr. Perkins, and their pals in the RR consider his sexual acts immoral but denying AIDS prevention services to prostitutes to be moral! Disgraceful.
Sickening…
What’s up with last Friday’s open thread? I’ve tried posting there three times, to no avail.
Did you say a swear word, Richard?
Good post and points, Noyatin.
I have no problems with Eliza, just A LOT of issues with this particular post.
Thanks, Alba.
Here’s an excerpt from an op-ed Vitter wrote in the Times-Picayune (sp?) in 1998:
“Some current polls may suggest that people are turned off by the whole Clinton mess and don’t care — because the stock market is good, the Clinton spin machine is even better or other reasons. But that doesn’t answer the question of whether President Clinton should be impeached and removed from office because he is morally unfit to govern.”
If extra-marital sex makes one unfit to govern, how can he admit to criminal extra-marital sex and not resign?
I would like to say that it is reported that Vitter did this a while back and he either confessed, or got cawught by his wife. It is reported that he fessed up to her and they had counseling and they went on with their lives.
I don’t think it would have been neccessary for him to make a statement to all America that his wife busted him (this is too funny.) Okay he made amends to his wife and they moved on.
Now he finds himself busted in public and he tries to make ammends. Perkins accepts that (only because he has a vested interest) but we don’t.
He’s just like any other politician or human being as far as I am concerned.
Except….Now that I know he was cheating on his wife while publicly decrying that activity, I personally would never trust him again.
Let’s say I go hire a prostitute. I get caught.
I didn’t stand on the national stage and say this was immoral and we should get tough on this type of activity.
I am basically blameless. Vitter is not. He should step down now.
There is a huge problem with this type of hippocrite…they are…hippocrites. All of us decent folks should not have to stand for this kind of horseshit. We don’t do that stuff, and we listen to those that tell us it is bad. Then they do it?
This shit flys in the face of logic. People like Perkins that try to justify it are as bad as the person that violated our trust.
If I start evangelizing in the public square about morality and I get caught at this kind of stuff, I know that I would not be effective from then on out. It is ludicrous to think that I could go on pushing a morality that I do not posess.
This is sheer lunacy.
It is this blatant in your face stunning contradiction that holds no logical, emotional or spiritual value that ABSOLUTELY defeats anything the political right can say about the incident.
This is so amazingly absurd even MJ’s anal sore dog can bark the difference.
“Here let me introduce to you the guy that is looking out for your well-being–the man of God.” When he lives your home the garbage cans have been turned over, the dog has been raped and your wallet was stolen in the name of the lord.
Noyatin — excellent response @ July 12th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
If MJ and co. understood why this is a problem, they could understand that Defcon is pro-constitutional democracy, not anti-Christian.
The RR fails to realize they are going in circles with blinders on.
Why is it that many rich, powerful, white, “religious” males frequent prostitutes? With so many of them involved in that particular trade, you’d think that they would make it legal, so at least they wouldn’t be caught in an illegal activity…then it would only be a question of morality.
—————
Clinton got impeached for his lie about his sexual liason. Since it’s illegal, ol’ GWB will probably commute his sentence (assuming he will even be prosecuted for it).
Well, his wife said if she ever caught her husband cheating, she’d pull a Lorena Bobbitt. So far, I believe she hasn’t kept her word. But then the Bobbitt guy went on to be a porn-star from what I understand, so Vitter seems to have it made in the shade no matter what happens.
Then Tony Perkins can turn around and say that Mitt Romney failed to keep Vitter out of the hotel rooms every which way, but he forgives him.
Vitter, I mean.
I believe statute has run it’s course, Carla.
[…] Wow. As if Tony Perkins’ close affiliation with Vitter wasn’t enough, it now turns out that Jack Burkman — a former lobbyist for the Family Research Council — appears to also be on the DC Madam’s list. […]
Alba, isn’t that just the way it goes? Damn statute of limitations!
I could be wrong, Carla. If so he should he held to the law as would any other person. It makes me happy to know his wife has forgiven him, and that he believes God has as well, but the American people deserve to see our wayward politicians held accountable for their dirty deeds when that deed violates the law.
On a related note, Jack Burkman, who did work for FRC, and did promote the ‘family values’ theme was also busted. He was on that list, and is also the subject of a MySpace investiation, where he was looking for sex. Guess it turns out he needed to pay for it ’cause he couldn’t get it for free with strange young girls.
Sure is a lot of that going around. What’s teh problem with these guys, can’t get anything from regular women so they need to resort to potential pedophilia (myspace is mostly teens, isn’t it?) or prostitution? What, they need someone to treat them like the god they believe themselves to be?
mouse,
according to most of those who share ultra-conservative religious ideologies, it is a “double standard” and a “frame-up.” But only when they’re caught
I find it perplexing because I do not see a lot of democrats or liberals legislating morality.
True, you do seldom see dems or liberals in general trying to legislate morality. They’re too busy trying to save the world from real problems instead of worrying about saving people’s “souls” form “eternal damnation” like the RR says they are trying to do.
Yeah, its always “I’ve been framed” when these pinheads get busted. Its funny as hell too!
Vitter has some more claims from LA hookers, which he is denying.

Carla Says:
Why is it that many rich, powerful, white, “religious” males frequent prostitutes?
Bill ask, Carla, you know this because?
The Vitter thing is another example of a closet case claiming to represent “family values” and morality.
He’s as bad as “Pastor” Haggard.

Museum nears 100K visitors BY BRENNA KELLY | BKELLY@ENQUIRER.COM
PETERSBURG – The parking lot is filled by 10 a.m. The line stretches out of the door. Inside hundreds more wait to tour the Creation Museum.
Today, less than two months after it opened, the Creation Museum expects to top 100,000 visitors.
Officials had previously said they hoped for at least 250,000 visitors in the first year.
“The crowds have just been getting bigger every day since opening,” said Mike Zovath, vice president of museum operations. “It’s really exciting, we’re pretty pleased with the response.” Fridays and Saturdays have proved to be the busiest days…
“Sometimes it’s an hour and a half in the ticket line and another hour to get into the museum,” Zovath said. The first two Saturdays in July have more visitors than previous Saturday, Zovath said. He expects about 3,500 people to come through the museum today, just about 500 less than attended on opening day. “It’s pretty exciting,” he said. “But there are quite a few challenges as well to make sure everybody enjoys the experience.”
