DefCon advisory board member Erwin Chemerinsky has a piece in today’s Washington Post, discussing the real motivations and ramifications of the Public Expression of Religion Act. Here are some snippets:
With little public attention or even notice, the House of Representatives has passed a bill that undermines enforcement of the First Amendment’s separation of church and […]

While the new documentary Jesus Camp has been out in select cities for a few weeks, today it opens in a number of theaters across the country. If you live in one these areas, definitely go check it out. And if you can, bring a DefCon sign up sheet with you to collect names as […]

The Colorado Springs Independent is reporting that Dobson’s Focus on the Family fired a former employee, Kathy Roever, who was let go by the organization after her daughter was raped and murdered. According to the Independent, Roever, who worked in the Focus mail room for nine years, was fired “while still grieving….. for missing too […]

Adding to the recent backlash against the religious right from former GOP leaders, Senator John Danforth (R-MO) has released a book criticizing the religious right and the improper influence they wield over the political leadership today. His message: the religious right will ultimately fail because their views are extreme and are opposed by the majority […]

This is hot! From former House Majority Leader Dick Armey’s (R -TX) Sept 23rd Wall Street Journal op-ed.
The national representatives of the social conservative movement used to be sophisticated and tolerant. Today, they are sophomoric and angry. It’s an embarrassing spectacle seeing leaders bullied around by the likes of James Dobson.
Get the full skinny at […]

Last night, in a last ditch effort to appease the religious right, the House of Representatives passed the Public Expression of Religion Act — H.R. 2679 — by a margin of 244-173. Click here to read the actual bill.
The bill still needs to pass the Senate, which seems unlikely considering the amount that needs […]

Check out this CBS evening news piece interviewing both Tony Perkins and Jim Wallis on right vs. left evangelicals. Wallis makes some statements that are, if not entirely new, right on point.
Oh Tony. How did fighting abortion and gay marriage become more important than helping your fellow man?

This afternoon, at the behest of the religious right, the House will vote on H.R. 2679, the Public Expression of Religion act. This bill would deal a huge blow to our nation’s commitment to the separation of church by a repealing a statute that allows lawyers to recover their legal fees should they successfully challenge […]

More news from this weekends Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. So in the Pastor’s Breakfast on Friday morning — I was, suprisingly, not able to attend — Rev. Jerry Falwell had this to say regarding the Presidential ambitions of Hillary Clinton:
“I hope she’s the candidate. Because nothing will energize my [constituency] like Hillary […]

On Tuesday, the pro-intelligent design “think tank,” the Discovery Institute, joined the recent campaign attacking DefCon’s efforts to defend science.
The Discovery Institute sent some relatively confrontational letters to the editor of two major Ohio papers, calling out DefCon by name and again attacking board members Lawrence Krauss and Patricia Princehouse.
This only adds to […]

Update #2 from FRC’s Values Voter summit. Above, Mr Dobson, up close and personal.
Wow! Don Feder is an angry man. Feder was part of a panel here attacking hollywood - as Feder put it, “if you’re a christian, hollywood hates you.” Feder made a number of anti-muslim remarks — or at least innuendoes. He […]

Wanna get scared? Check out this ABC story on the new documentary, Jesus Camp — highlighting the North Dakota Bible camp, Kids on Fire.
On another note, who the hell produced this segment? Jerry Falwell? Or did Lauren Sandler really label herself a secular, liberal feminist?!?!?

(Tony Perkins and James Dobson, discussing homosexuals, President Bush, and bear hunting — seriously — at today’s summit)
I just spent the morning at the Family Research Council’s Values Voters summit here in D.C.
Lots of religious right leaders as well as politicians courting their favor. Tony Perkins and James Dobson led their followers through an […]

On his website today, RenewAmerica.us, religious right leader Alan Keyes attacked DefCon. According to Mr. Keyes, “Defcon created a front group in Ohio titled “Help Ohio Public Education” (HOPE). Voters were led to believe that the front group is a grass roots movement in Ohio. Quite to the contrary, it consists of two leftist college […]
